What Freemasonry is not
A few things get said about us that simply aren't true, so let's clear them up.
- It is not a religion. We require a belief in a Supreme Being, but we never define it for you. Men of every faith sit together in our lodge, and discussion of sectarian religion is prohibited within it.
- It is not a political organization. Politics, like religion, is left at the door. It's one of the reasons the friendships last.
- It is not a secret society. Our buildings have our name on them and our members wear rings. We keep certain modes of recognition private — that's all. Everything else about us is a matter of public record.
- It is not an insurance plan or a business network. Using the lodge for personal gain is expressly forbidden.
What we actually do
We meet for business, we confer degrees, we eat together, and we look after each other and our community. Lodges raise money for local causes, support Masonic charities, mentor young people, and quietly help brothers and widows who have hit hard times. Most of it never makes the newspaper — which is rather the point.
